On Tuesday, March 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Southern Utah University’s Student Involvement and Leadership Office will host a Wild and Weird event in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom. The event will provide live animals, unconventional snacks and more boundary-pushing activities.
Scheduled just days before spring break, the event is designed to give students a break from the pressures of midterm exams by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. Live animals such as snakes, tarantulas, iguanas and more will be featured.
“It’s just gonna be an opportunity for people to kind of step out of their comfort zones, maybe embarrass themselves a little bit, and get to know new people,” said Isaac Byrd, one of the directors with the Student and Programming Program. “They are gonna try new things that maybe they wouldn’t be able to otherwise.”
A large-scale edition of the board game “Curses” will be available, as well as a variety of foods to push attendees’ culinary boundaries.
“I’m excited because I’m ordering crickets that we can put on ice cream,” said Byrd. “I’ve never really tried them before, so I feel like if I’m running the event, I have to try..”
Alongside this, the event will include prizes for those who complete its challenges. Through these shared experiences, students will have the opportunity to connect in a unique way.
“I’m most excited to see people be able to make new connections and hopefully people walk away with friends that they never would have met otherwise,” added Byrd. “I think this is just a chance for people to maybe grow in different ways and hopefully they take the opportunity to do that.”
