Flippin’ Birds spring back into the win column

Seeking to get back into the win column, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team traveled west to face Sacramento State University on Friday, Feb. 28. SUU dominated from the first rotation, winning 196.100-193.575.

With the win, Southern Utah improves to 10-4 on the year and 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Sacramento State falls to 8-7 on the season. 

Vault
Neither team fared very well on the vault. Southern Utah scored a 48.975 while the Hornets struggled with a 48.425. 

Ellie Cacciola led all gymnasts with a 9.875, followed by SUU’s Mia Hampton and SSU’s Sarah Lutrel with a 9.825.

Bars
The Flippin’ Birds found their form on the bars, led by Niya Randolph, who dropped a 9.900. The Hornets continued to struggle, scoring just a 47.850. 

Southern Utah laid out a 49.025 and nearly had a two-point lead over the Hornets. 

Beam
Southern Utah continued to pull away with a good performance on the beam. Cacciola led SUU with a 9.850, followed by Rylee Miller, who landed a 9.825. 

Sacramento State continued to make mistakes, scoring a 48.375. Emma Morgenthaler led the Hornets with a 9.750. 

Floor
Looking to secure their third win in conference play, SUU threw out a 49.150 on the floor. Randolph led Southern Utah with 9.875.

Sacramento State had their best rotation of the evening, dropping a 48.925, but it wasn’t enough as the Flippin’ Birds won 196.100-193.575.

Randolph finished first in the all-around with a 39.350, followed by Sacramento State’s Morgenthaler with a 39.000. 

What’s next?
Southern Utah tees it off tomorrow against the University of California, Davis on Sunday, Mar. 2, at 3 p.m.
