Flippin’ Birds fall short of Cardinals 

Fresh off a win on Monday, Feb. 10, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team hosted Stanford University on Friday, Feb. 14, in the America First Event Center. The Flippin’ Birds fought hard but fell short to the Cardinals 196.775-196.125.

With the loss, Southern Utah falls to 9-4 on the year, while Stanford improves to 7-1 on the season. 

Vault
Southern Utah started the evening on the vault. Ellie Cacciola started things off for SUU with a team-high 9.875. Four different T-Birds landed 9.825s, giving SUU a 49.175.

Anna Roberts took flight for the Cardinals, landing a 9.900 and helping Stanford record a 49.150.

Uneven bars
Stanford took control of the meet on the uneven bars, dropping a 49.225. Brenna Neault led the way for the Cardinals with a 9.900, followed by Anapaula Gutierrez with a 9.875.

SUU struggled with two girls falling, receiving large deductions. Isabella Neff and Niya Randolph led the way for the Flippin’ Birds with a pair of 9.825s. 

Beam
SUU really struggled on the rotation, having two girls fall. Rylie Miller led all gymnasts with a 9.875 on the rotation, but SUU scored 48.750 as a team. 

Ashley Carter, Sienna Robinson and Neault landed a 9.850, helping Stanford record a 49.125. 

Floor
With the floor as the last routine for SUU, the Flippin’ Birds put out their best scores of the night. Randolph and Cacciola lead the way with a 9.875, followed by the four girls scoring a 9.850.

Alana Walker and Roberts added a 9.875 for Stanford and secured their 196.775-196.125 win. 

Neault was awarded the all-around score of 39.425.

What’s next?
Southern Utah will have a bye week and will not compete until Friday, Feb. 28.
