Southern Utah University’s Ballroom Dance Company is gearing up for their annual spring showcase, which this year will be an alumni concert. The event, scheduled for April 11th and 12th, will highlight dance numbers from the past 30 years.
“I really love everybody here, they’ve honestly become like family,” said MK Judd, a dancer who has been with the company for over two years. “I see them every morning, afternoon and evening. We’re always hanging out together.”

The company is divided into three teams: beginner, intermediate and tour. Each team focuses on different skill levels and styles, all taught by director Andrea Johnson, who brings over 30 years of ballroom dance experience.
Performances include a variety of dance styles, such as the lively American swing, the graceful waltz, Brazil’s rhythmic samba and many others. The tour team also travels annually to perform in various states and countries, combining their performances with service projects.
“Going on tour is exciting because we get to see new places outside of our little bubble in Cedar City,” said Judd. “I think we’re going to California, Nevada and many other communities. We might even visit a couple of dance clubs to see it all in action.”
The tour team practices every weekday from 6:00 to 7:50 a.m., demonstrating their commitment to the craft. They can be seen performing at local events, SUU activities and their own shows.
As the showcase gets closer, the team plans to ramp up promotions to raise awareness about the Ballroom Dance Company on campus. To stay updated on BDC performances, follow them on Instagram at @suuballroom or check them out at suu.edu/pva/ballroom.
