In their home opener, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team hosted Sacramento State University on Friday, Feb. 7, in the America First Event Center. Southern Utah dominated on the uneven bars and floor routine en route to a 196.150-192.750 win.
With the win, Southern Utah improves their average to 195.442 on the season and a record of 8-3.
Vault
It was a tightly contested match in the vault rotation as both teams struggled early. Sacramento State’s Sarah Lutrel led the way with a 9.800, and SUU’s Brinlee Christensen and Ellie Cacciola scored a 9.775.
It was a close rotation, but Southern Utah led after vault 48.700-46.500.
Uneven bars
Southern Utah took over on the uneven bars. SUU recorded the top five scores in the rotation, with Trista Goodman and Christensen finishing first with a 9.850. Hannah Stizman scored a team-high 9.750 for the Hornets.
SUU easily handled the rotation, finishing with a 49.100.
Beam
Once again, Southern Utah showed out on the beam. Rylie Miller led the way for the Flippin’ Birds with her team-high 9.875, followed by Cacciola with a 9.850. Lutrel once again led the way for the Hornets with a 9.775.
SUU outlasted Sacramento State with a 49.050-47.950 win on beam.
Floor
With the Flippin’ Birds holding a strong lead over the Hornets, SUU looked to finish strong on the floor routine. The top six scores belonged to Southern Utah, with Cacciola and Mia Hampton leading the way with a 9.875.
Southern Utah controlled the meet the entire way and won the match 196.150-192.750.
What’s next?
Southern Utah will continue at home when they host Utah State University on Monday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.
