The Internal Revenue Service announced the United States 2025 tax season will begin on Monday, Jan 27, 2025. This tax season will include modernized tools expanded upon by the agency this past year.
The IRS created tools to allow taxpayers to more efficiently file their taxes and protect from scams this season. One tool expands features of the Direct File program, a free program that allows users in select states to file their federal income tax returns directly through the IRS. The web-based program works on mobile phones, laptops, tablets and desktop computers. Through a series of step-by-step questions, it guides taxpayers through the federal income tax return process.
Direct File also covers more tax situations. Taxpayers claiming child and dependent care credit, premium tax credit, credit for the elderly and disabled and retirement savings contribution credits may now use Direct File to assist them with these situations.
Past filing systems, according to the IRS website, achieved levels of service at around 85% and five minute wait times on their phone lines, and hope to grow these numbers this year.
Another implementation this year includes a new chatbot to help guide Direct File users through the tax filing process. The chatbot will be available in both English and Spanish, with a live chat option if additional help is needed.
With the official tax filing season beginning soon, the IRS Free File service allows taxpayers to prepare and file their returns now. This allows those who want to file early to do so without having to wait until the 27th.
The IRS urges taxpayers to use a trusted tax professional to stay safe this tax season.
