Day 1 Inauguration actions of President Donald Trump

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Jan. 20, 2025. Following the proceedings, he gave his inaugural address

The former president was first sworn in as the 45th president in 2017. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts swore him in on Monday, as he took the presidential oath of office for his second term.

“The Golden Age of America begins right now,” stated President Trump. “I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success. I will, very simply, put America first.”

Inauguration Day takes place every four years when a new U.S. president is elected. During the ceremony the president-elect and vice president-elect are sworn into office and recite an oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Since being sworn in, Trump has signed 26 executive orders. He rescinded 78 of former President Joe Biden’s executive actions and delivered on some of his campaign promises. Through the course of executive orders, Trump promised to eliminate the presence of foreign gangs, bring inflation costs down and revoke the electric vehicle mandate, to allow Americans to buy the car they choose.

“We will move with purpose and speed to bring back hope, prosperity, safety and peace for citizens of every race, religion, color and creed,” he shared.

Some orders went into effect immediately, including his pardon of Jan. 6 defendants, while others like the deflation order will take longer to execute. Some orders, including a pause on the TikTok ban and revoking birthright citizenship have faced legal challenges

President Trump gives his inaugural address

Trump is one of three presidents to sign executive orders on Day 1 of their term, the others being former Presidents Joe Biden and Bill Clinton.

Trump’s inauguration was originally set to take place on the West Front of the Capitol, similar to prior inaugurations. Though the proceedings moved inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda due to weather conditions, it limited the number of guests in attendance.

The day started with a morning prayer service and tea with President Biden, followed by Trump’s inaugural address and his presidential parade. The events ended with three inaugural balls where President Trump spoke.

“Above all, my message to Americans today,” Trump said, “is that it is time for us to once again act with courage, vigor and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization.”
