Flippin’ Birds prepare to launch 2025 season

After winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in 2024 and finishing  No. 27, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team is set for a new year. They want to make some noise around the nation, especially after wins against Penn State University and Brigham Young University during the 2024 season. Some familiar faces will return to the floor for the Flippin’ Birds, along with the addition of new talented gymnasts.

Familiar faces
Niya Randolph took no time in making her name known in college gymnastics during her freshman year. From winning the 2024 MPSF Gymnast of the Year to delivering a nearly flawless 9.925 floor routine, Randolph cannot be overlooked in the 2025 season.

Brinlee Christensen made a name for herself with a 9.875 floor routine against BYU in the 2024 season. This, along with an all-around great season, earned her the MPSF Freshman of the Year. She will be a key piece in a stacked floor lineup for Southern Utah.

Taylor Gull had a standout performance last season, hitting a 9.900 routine against Utah State University. She also made MPSF Second All-Team last year, making her a serious competitor on the team.

New stars
With plenty of accolades already earned throughout her gymnastics career, Mya North has lots of potential on the floor with the Flippin’ Birds. The five-time regional qualifier is a fierce competitor who brings a lot of power to the team.

After not competing in her freshman year at Southern Utah, Carilia Martinez will take the floor. She has many impressive feats, such as being a qualifier for the Puerto Rican National Team, a four-time regional qualifier and a six-time state champion.

Mia Hampton comes to SUU a four-time national qualifier from Bronco Elite. The coaches have been very impressed with the freshman in preparation for the season and see her as a potential star on the team.

Season Opener
The Flippin’ Birds will begin their season on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m., in the Pacific Coast Collegiate Challenge in Oceanside, California. Southern Utah will compete against the University of Arizona, Rutgers University, and Wilberforce University.
