Struggling Thunderbirds host the Buccaneers

In wake of a five-game losing streak, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team hosts Park University Gilbert on Friday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m., in the America First Event Center. This game can also be streamed on ESPN+.

Southern Utah
After dropping their home game against Sam Houston State University, SUU enters this game 1-10 overall and 1-3 at home. On average for the year, Southern Utah is allowing opponents to score 73.5 points per game or 44% when shooting from the field and 37.8% shooting from three.

It has been a rocky start for the T-Birds offensively. Southern Utah averages less than 60 points per game and has only one girl averaging 10 or more points per game. SUU is shooting just 37.9% from the field and 25.3% from three, both well below their average from a season ago.

Guard Sydney Gandy has been the leading scorer for SUU. The graduate student from Long Beach, California is averaging 10.8 points per game and leads the team with 27 made three-pointers.

Park University
The Buccaneers have started the season off strongly and are carrying momentum into this game. Park University is 6-4 on the season and is on a three-game winning streak. During this winning streak, Park Gilbert is averaging 82.3 points per game.

Park Gilbert does a great job at forcing turnovers on a consistent basis but struggles with taking care of the ball. The Buccaneers force 27.4 turnovers a game and score 22.3 points off of those turnovers — but commit 21.1 turnovers themselves.

Savannah Huerta has been a force with the ball in her hands offensively. The senior guard from Covington, Washington is averaging 18.3 points per game and is shooting 41.1% from three and 93.8% from the free-throw line.

This will be the first time these two teams have faced off against each other.
