After one of the most historic seasons in Southern Utah University football history, senior running back Targhee Lambson has been named one of the three finalists for the 2024 Walter Payton Award, an award given to the most outstanding offensive player in the Division I Football Conference Subdivision.
Lambson hit the ground running during the 2024 campaign, rushing for a school-high and was No. 1 out of all FCS players with 1922 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns in 12 regular season games. Lambson also added five catches for 43 yards through the air.
On Friday, Dec. 13, Lambson was named United Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Lambson also earned UAC All-Conference first team.
The Walter Payton Award, also known as the “Heisman of the FCS” is one of the most prestigious awards in the nation. This year marks the 38th year this award is given. There are two other finalists along with Lambson.
Montana State University’s Tommy Mellott has been one of the nations best quarterbacks. Mellott, a senior from Butte, Montana, threw 26 touchdowns and was intercepted only once. Mellott also added 11 touchdowns on the ground and was named “Big Sky Player of the Year.”
The last nominee is North Dakota State University’s Cam Miller. The Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Year posted a nation’s best 179.9 passer rating and an impressive 74.2% completion percentage.
