Thunderbirds to take on the Buffaloes

After competing in the Nugget Classic, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will continue on the road to take on the University of Colorado, Boulder on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m.

“Right now we are just focused on getting better as a group and paying attention to the details,” said SUU Head Coach Tracy Mason. “Colorado is a terrific team with a lot of weapons.”

Colorado
Entering the week, Colorado is 7-2 on the year and is 5-1 in their last six games. The Buffaloes are scoring 74 points per game while giving up an average of 62.9 points per contest. Colorado does a great job of moving the ball, averaging 18.9 assists per game but have turned the ball over a lot, committing 17.2 turnovers a game.

The Buffaloes have three different players averaging 10 or more points per game. Guard Frida Formann leads the team with 14.6 points per game with Lior Garzon No. 2 on the team scoring 11.7 points per contest. Jade Masogayo has been a force in the paint. Masogayo is shooting 56.2% from the field and is scoring 11.6 points per game.

If Colorado is to defend its homecourt, they will need to move the ball at an effective rate while forcing Southern Utah to turn the ball over.

Southern Utah
The Thunderbirds’ 2024-25 season has started slowly. SUU is 1-8 overall and 0-6 away from Cedar City. The offense has struggled early as well, averaging only 59.9 points per game on 37.6% shooting from the field and 25.8% from three.

Sydney Gandy is the only SUU player averaging over 10 points per game but is only shooting 34.4% from the field. Gandy also leads the team in steals with 11 on the year. Jaeden Brown is averaging 42.9% from three but has only attempted seven shots from behind the arc.

If the Thunderbirds want to steal a win against the Buffaloes, SUU needs to shoot the ball well while limiting the turnovers.

Southern Utah is 0-6 all-time against Colorado.
