Thunderbirds dismantled in loss to Bruins

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, the University of California Los Angeles defeated the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team 88-43. SUU falls to 6-2 on the year, while UCLA improves to 6-1.

A blowout loss for the Thunderbirds on Tuesday, Nov. 26, was different from how they saw this matchup going, but there is a lot for the team to build on moving forward.

First half
UCLA started the game with suffocating defense, using a full-court press and not allowing SUU to attempt a shot for the first three minutes of the game, despite SUU having seven turnovers in the first five minutes they kept the game close.

The defense was the essence of the game, as the Thunderbirds and the Bruins kept each other from converting offensively early. The lead for UCLA grew rapidly when Lazar Stefanovic checked into the game and scored 13 straight points, giving UCLA a 20-point lead. The first half ended 20-43 for the Bruins.

Second half
The Bruins came out on fire and quickly expanded their lead to 40 points, making it nearly impossible for SUU to score. Lazar continued to lead the team in scoring, finishing with 19 from off of the bench.

UCLA’s defense forced a whopping 30 turnovers, which was the biggest factor in helping them cruise to an 88-43 victory. Another big part of the win was that UCLA took 40 more field goals than SUU, and shot an effective 47.9%.
