After both teams started the season undefeated, Loyola University Chicago narrowly escaped Southern Utah University on their Tuesday, Nov. 19 matchup in Chicago, 76-72. Loyola Chicago improves to 5-0 on the season and Southern Utah University falls to 4-1.
First half
A back-and-forth game saw the Thunderbirds and the Ramblers make shot after shot trading buckets. The largest lead of the half was a nine-point advantage for Loyola but was quickly erased by an 8-2 run by SUU. The first half came to a close at 32-35 Loyola.
Second half
Jamir Simpson took over in the second half, scoring 20 points. Simpson finished with 28 points, leading all scorers. The second period was more of the same action presented in the first half, with both teams trading shot for shot.
The game came down to free throws, and it was Loyola’s Justin Moore who capitalized, giving Loyola a four-point lead. A game-sealing steal from Loyola ended the match 76-72.

— Dominique Ford and Simpson combined for 46 of Southern Utah’s 72 points.
— Moore led all players with seven assists.
— Jamari Sibley recorded 10 rebounds, which is the third time this season he has recorded 10-plus rebounds in a game.
