After winning their season opener, the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team hosted a non-conference matchup against Florida International University. This was a physical and messy game for both teams, but the Thunderbirds prevailed in the 80-75 win, improving their record to 2-0 to start the season, while the Panthers fell to 0-2.
First half
Right out of the gate both teams were committing a lot of fouls. The Thunderbirds shot eight free throws within the first five minutes of regulation. FIU’s relentless defensive pursuit forced a lot of turnovers and made it hard for SUU to get quality shots.
Neither team was able to hold any offensive momentum in the half as the teams exchanged shots and gained narrow leads.The biggest lead for either side came 13 minutes into regulation when the Thunderbirds were up 22-17.
The Score was looking to be tied at the half, but with a few seconds left, Jeffery Langston Jr. swiped the ball from the Panthers and set Jamari Sibley up for a big dunk to put the Thunderbirds up 36-34 at halftime.
Second half
Coming out of the break, the game went on similarly into the first half. Neither team was able to get a big lead, and there were plenty of fouls and turnovers. Guard Jayden Brewer operated the offense for FIU with his quick slashing and passing ability. The Thunderbirds had a more combined effort, with Jamir Simpson, Tavi Jackson and Hercy Miller shooting the ball efficiently.
Momentum shifted in Southern Utah’s favor when they capped off their 12-4 run for a 63-51 lead. During this stretch, they prevented the Panthers from scoring for three minutes of regulation.
The Thunderbirds held this momentum until the 2-minute mark. FIU was making shots and forcing a lot of turnovers and fouls. They cut the deficit to four points with thirty seconds left, but gave up an easy basket to Langston Jr. that ultimately sealed the game for Southern Utah, winning 80-75.
