The student senate at Southern Utah University discussed funding for the Commercial Music Club and College of Natural Sciences at their meeting on Nov. 4. The senate also answered questions regarding the parking situation on campus.
Budget proposals
Performing and Visual Arts Senator Maren Green worked with the Commercial Music Club to move funds from SUUSA’s budget to pay for hotel costs for students to participate in the National Association of Music Merchants or NAMM Conference.
This club is a university-sponsored organization that supports commercial music majors by providing them with networking opportunities, skill development and career advancement. The NAMM conference is the world’s largest gathering of music professionals and helps students secure high-profile jobs and internships.
Southern Utah students who attend this event currently pay for food and travel expenses on top of hotel costs. This funding would reduce the financial burden on students and enable greater participation.
“Zach Anderson had an internship at NAMM, which in turn got him an internship at a recording studio in Paris,” shared club president, Paul Pulsipher. “Now he’s finishing his program at SUU in Paris because he went to NAMM.”
In a unanimous agreement, SB #24/25-03 passed, which provides $2,000 to cover hotel costs to increase NAMM accessibility for students. Following the budget funding, the club will participate in fundraising events to gain money for future events.
Jackson Thomas, Natural Sciences Senator, then shared the proposed funding for SB #24/25-04 which would move $925 of SUUSA’s budget to cover event costs for the College of Natural Sciences. These events include donuts with the dean and cookies with the chair.
These events promote engagement while providing opportunities for informal networking and discussions. The senate voted unanimously in favor of the bill.
Parking concerns
After the matters of business, the senate opened for public comment. Students were previously asked to share concerns on the Instagram page. These concerns focused on parking issues.
An update was posted on the SUU Portal earlier this week regarding the parking on 300 West:
“The Utah Department of Transportation has recently reconfigured the parking on 300 West. The diagonal parking stalls have now been replaced with parallel parking. While this has reduced the number of parking spaces on the street, it will provide better safety for cyclists using the bicycle lane,” read the update. “In addition, the new parking lot north of the campus police station is nearing completion and should be open within a few days.”
The next Student Senate will be held on Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Starlight Room on the second floor of the student center. Students are encouraged to attend to voice concerns or comment on issues they may encounter.
