Women’s Lacrosse enters third season

The Southern Utah University’s women’s lacrosse team is entering their third season of competition after spending the previous two seasons recruiting players and building their program.

“We actually have people involved and who have played before. When we started we only had 13 players and I got asked by a friend to play goalie,” said senior midfielder Aspen Einerson. “I had never played lacrosse before.”

This season, the lacrosse team has been trying to gain more local support and grow their social media presence as they try to expand the team.

“We are actually organizing a board and trying to get the team ready to hand off next season,” Einerson said. “We have been working with the school more to get access to Eccles Coliseum, plan a spring tournament and host clinics for the local high schools.”

The team is in the process of planning their first home tournament to take place in the spring, over the weekend of Feb. 14.

“A lot has been going into this planning. We have never hosted a tournament before, so it’s all so new and we need all the support we can get,” said junior attack Danielle Dees.

The team must play at least eight games to qualify for regionals. Along with hosting a home tournament, they will also be traveling to Idaho and Montana in the spring to meet those requirements.

“I am excited to be able to travel and go to tournaments as a team, it’s a great environment and everyone’s a family. It’s fun to have the opportunity to play a sport with people who share the same love for it,” said Dees.

The club’s goal is to continue to expand and recruit players from all over, and hopefully one day become sanctioned.

“I hope that more girls keep wanting to come out and join the community we’ve built,” said Dees. “It has become a bigger and bigger club at SUU and it has been awesome to see its growth.”

The program is always looking for new players to join. If students are interested in playing lacrosse or getting involved with the team, email suuwomenslax@gmail.com, or find them on instagram @suuwomenslacrosse.

Practice is every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Eccles Coliseum for the remainder of the fall season and beginning in the spring.
