Football travels to West Georgia for a conference clash

After a week of extra rest, the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds football team looks to continue their impressive conference play when they travel to take on the University of West Georgia Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 12 p.m.

Southern Utah is 3-4 overall, and are tied for fourth in the United Athletic Conference with a 2-1 record. The Wolves are 2-5 overall and sit in ninth place in the UAC with a record of 0-5.

The Thunderbirds showed signs of great offensive proficiency on the passing and rushing attack in their last game against Eastern Kentucky University. Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald has been switching quarterbacks a lot this season, but after quarterback Jackson Berry threw for 204 yards on 13 completed passes and three touchdowns, they might have their number one option.

The main offensive weapon for SUU in the run game is running back Targhee Lambson. In the last game, Lambson had 34 carries for 170 yards and three touchdowns.

Lambson is second in the UAC in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, and is one of three players to have over 1,000 rushing yards this season.

While the Thunderbirds defense has had its struggles this season, there are a few key players who have helped the team succeed in the UAC.

Freshman Jayden Robertson is tied for first in the conference in interceptions with four. Another star has been linebacker Kohner Cullimore, who places third in the UAC in tackles while also having two sacks on the  year.

The Wolves have also been switching quarterbacks in recent games. The quarterback for the last two games has been Quincy Casey, who has 804 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Casey is also a threat running the ball with 134 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The two receivers providing a lot of the offense for West Georgia are Karmello English and Dylan Gary. English has 39 catches, 604 yards and two touchdowns, and Gary has 36 catches, 550 yards and six touchdowns.

The weak point of the Wolves offense is rushing, as they only have 931 yards as a team in seven games.

On defense, UWG has a solid unit on the line, averaging three sacks per game. The leader of this effort is defensive lineman Malik Charles with five sacks and defensive end Mar’Quavious Moss with four sacks this year.

The secondary for the Wolves has struggled this season. The team only has one interception on the year and allows 214 passing yards per game.

This will be the first ever matchup between these two teams.
