Homecoming 2024: A week of events to fill SUU’s campus

Southern Utah University’s annual Homecoming week is here, with events running from Monday, Oct. 7 to Saturday, Oct. 12. Students and community alike are invited to participate in this week’s activities.

Monday
The first events of the week will be the homecoming kickoff party on Monday, Oct. 7, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Library Quad and Bread & Soup Nite, with the addition of Karaoke from 5 p.m. –  7 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom. Featuring music, food booths, games, soups and desserts, students are invited to start the week in a festive mood.

Tuesday
On Tuesday, students are encouraged to take a look at the newly renovated Gerald R. Sherratt Library. At 7:30 p.m., the Pep Rally and Powder Puff Football Game will  take place at the Eccles Coliseum.

Wednesday
Then the Royal T-Bird Pageant will be held in the Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 9, where participants will compete to win the SUU Royalty title.

Thursday
Three events will take place on Thursday, Oct 10. At 5:30pm, the International Food and Festival Fair will be hosted in the Ballroom. The women’s volleyball team will then take on Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Thin Line Comedy Improv & Comedy Show will begin their performance in the Sharwan Smith Student Center at 7:30 p.m.

Friday
The next day, Forever Red will celebrate its 14th anniversary with a drone show. All are welcome to enjoy live music from ABBA Mania and Rhinestone Rodeo at 7:30 p.m. on the Upper Quad. The evening will close at 11:30 p.m. with True T-Bird Night at Founders Monument. This is an opportunity for students to complete an SUU tradition and share a kiss with someone.

Saturday— Homecoming Day
The week will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 12, beginning with the Simply A Miracle Run at 8 a.m. The run is followed by the traditional Homecoming Pancake Breakfast to fill everyone’s stomach before admiring the Homecoming Parade on University Boulevard. Featuring the Thunderbird Marching Band, floats, vehicles and plenty of candy, the events set the scene for the rest of the day.

At noon, T-Bird Nation is invited to tailgate in the Eccles Coliseum parking lot before the main event of the week, the Homecoming Football Game, where the Thunderbirds will face off against Eastern Kentucky University at 2 p.m.

Following the football game, students can continue supporting the university’s sports teams at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center when the women’s volleyball team plays Grand Canyon University.

“I’m so ready for it to happen and see students be able to experience homecoming week,” said Emily Wixom, vice president of programming at SUU. “I hope students will stick around and show school spirit by cheering on our T-Birds.”

In partnership with the tradition keeper program, the Student Involvement and Leadership Office will give out tradition trackers. These will allow each student to receive stamps for attending events, and after five or more attendances to be eligible to win a prize.

“We have like fifteen $1000 scholarships, early registration, a courtside site to a basketball game and vouchers for next bread and soup night,” added Wixom. “So students have to make sure they don’t lose [the tracker].”

To receive the prize, participants will have to be present at the Homecoming Football Game.
