The Southern Utah University women’s soccerteam is back in action this week taking on Colorado College on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. The Thunderbirds finish up their four-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 12:30 p.m. against the University of Denver. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
Colorado College
The Tigers enter this week with an overall record of 3-3, including wins in three of their last four matches. Although the majority of Colorado college’s sports are played at the division lll level, the women’s soccer team competes in Division l as part of the Mountain West Conference.
Colorado College totaled only 15 goals last season, but so far this year they have totaled eight goals this season and average 1.33 goals per game. The Tigers have 33 of their 61 shots on goal, an average of 54.1%. Sophomore Kendall Memoly, freshman Finley Schoenbeck, and Kylie Smith all have two goals on the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Regan Wallace has appeared in five of the Tigers six matches with 18 saves and a save percentage of 72%. Wallace has given up only two goals in her last three games with eight saves and a save percentage of 86.6%.
University of Denver
The Pioneers are 4-2 on the year and have won four straight games, including a win against Colorado College. Their most impressive win was against Texas A&M University on Aug. 21. This will be the first time the University of Denver faces off against Southern Utah.
Senior midfielder Ella Frost leads the Pioneers with three goals on the year, almost surpassing last year’s total of four goals. Sophomore forward Michaela McGowan has six assists and two goals. Goalkeepers Alina Santos and Molly Wissman have been sharing equal playing time on the field with Santos getting the start in their last match.
Southern Utah
The Thunderbirds are still searching for their first win in the 2024 year with a record of just 0-3-1. Their one tie was a 1-1 draw against Eastern Washington University on Aug. 29. These are the final two games of their four-game homestand.
SUU is only averaging one goal and giving up two goals per game. Although they are struggling to score, Southern Utah is averaging 14 shots each game. Redshirt junior Whitney Gardner leads SUU in goals with two, yet is eighth on the team in total minutes played. Goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei has appeared in all four games and tied her season high in saves with five against the eagles.
