Thunderbirds continue impressive season at Bryan Clay Invitational

The Southern Utah University track and field team competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational April 11-13. A number of athletes made strides in the school record books and achieved personal bests, resulting in a productive weekend for the Thunderbirds.

Men’s recap
Hayden Harward finished in 18th place in the steeplechase with a time of eight minutes and 39.51 seconds. This showing earned him the SUU all-time record, dethroning his own previous best. To add to the significance of the performance, Harward beat the Olympic trials qualifying time of 8:40. Alongside Harward, Lanse Larsen delivered a commendable performance by setting a new personal best, finishing in 8:59.85. This places Larsen fifth all-time in SUU history.

Dylan Gibson placed second in the 400-meter, clocking in at 46.15 seconds. This beat his own second-place all-time school record.

Travis Feeny earned a fourth-place finish in the 5,000. Crossing the finish line in 13:45.18, he set a new personal best and sits with the fourth-best time in Thunderbird history.

Coleman Cragun competed in the 10,000 and finished with a time of 29:29.33, cracking into 10th-place in the SUU record book.

In the shot put, Stephen Campbell, Daniel Krynzel and Victor Pampuch all placed in the top 10. Campbell placed second with a throw of 53-10 1/4, Krynzel finished sixth with a throw of 51-9 and Pampuch notched ninth with a throw of 50 3/4. 

Bronis MacDougall launched a javelin throw 206-10, taking third at the meet.

Kaden Banks made noise in the discus event, taking third with a solid throw of 167.

Women’s recap
Rebecca Hazelet and Jessica Jericoff showed great strength in the hammer throw by taking first and ninth, respectively. Hazelet achieved a distance of 194-8, and Jericoff threw it 169-10.

Morgan Blackburn’s discus throw of 162-9 now places her third all-time in SUU history. The throw also got her fifth at the event. However, Blackburn wasn’t done, as she also took 25th in the shot put by clearing 39-9 3/4.

Ariana Baker took 11th in the pole vault with a height of 11-2 1/2.

Next for SUU
Both teams will be in Cedar City to host the Southern Utah University Coliseum Championships. The meet will take place on Saturday, April 20.
