SUU beats Utah State in rescheduled home game

The Southern Utah University softball team beat in-state foe Utah State University 10-8 on Wednesday, April 10. Southern Utah’s record improved to 16-19 on the season, while Utah State fell to 21-19.

Thunderbird Keimon Winston opened up the game on the mound and threw four innings until Emily Delgado came in for relief. Winston allowed Utah State to score two runs in the third inning, and Delgado finished the game allowing six runs to score.

The Aggies threw five pitchers during the game, and none of them could shut down the Thunderbird bats. Katie Zuniga started in the circle for Utah State and threw two innings. Hailey McLean and Jessica Stewart each threw one inning before Tess Bumiller and Denay Smith came in to finish the game.

SUU’s Karmyna Becerra opened up the game with a solo home run, one of three home runs hit by the Thunderbirds in the afternoon.

In the third inning, the Thunderbirds extended their lead to six runs when Capri Franzen hit a pinch-hit three-run home run, making the score 8-2 heading into the fourth.

The Aggies started to make a comeback in the fifth inning after a string of hits and an RBI by Alex Bunton. Later in the inning, a hit by Tatum Silva resulted in an error by Thunderbird Laurie Cooke that allowed two runs to score.

SUU got those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Ariyana Miranda hit the third home run of the game. A string of hits later in the inning scored another run. Heading into the sixth inning, the Thunderbirds were leading the Aggies by five.

Utah State battled back in the seventh inning when Silva hit an RBI double followed by a Zereniti Sousa sacrifice fly.

Despite the battle shown by the Aggies, it was not enough to win the game, and the final score was a 10-8 Thunderbird win.
