Thunderbirds split double header with Utah Tech

On Tuesday, April 9, the Southern Utah University softball team went 1-1 in their double header against Utah Tech University. The Thunderbirds were shut out in the first game, losing 5-0 before pitching a 10-0 shutout in the second matchup.

SUU moved to 15-19 overall and 5-9 in the Western Athletic Conference, while Utah Tech advanced to 13-25 overall and 6-8 in WAC play.

Southern Utah ended a seven-game losing streak to the Trailblazers that spanned back to 2022.

Game one
The Blazers got it going in the first inning with Laura Lockard driving in an RBI double.

Both of the following innings went scoreless before Utah Tech opened up their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, going up 4-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Thunderbirds had Ariyana Miranda on third base with just one out before both Taralyn Ollison and Bella Garcia struck out swinging. The Trailblazers added another run in the bottom of the fifth to secure their 5-0 victory.

Utah Tech starting pitcher Attlyn Johnston delivered a masterclass in her fourth win of the season. She allowed just two hits in seven innings pitched while tying a season-high nine strikeouts.

Game two
Southern Utah turned the tables on Utah Tech in their second matchup of the day.

The Thunderbirds put up a blistering six runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Arianna Ramirez capped off the huge inning with a three-run home run, her fifth of the season, that drove in Karmyna Becerra and Emily Gonzalez.

SUU’s dominance didn’t stop there, as they tallied another four runs in the third inning with Ramirez once again culminating the scoring with an RBI single.

Neither team earned a run throughout the rest of the game, and the Thunderbirds took a 10-0 victory in five innings.

Utah Tech left six runners on base in the matchup.
