The Southern Utah University Ballroom Dance Company will be presenting their spring concert on April 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium Theater. “Dance the Night Away,” inspired by the song from “Barbie,” features songs from popular movies, musicals and television shows.
There are three ballroom teams at SUU, and all of them have been rehearsing for the concert throughout the semester. They eventually joined forces to finish preparing for the concert in something called “cleaning week.”
“The week before concert, we all meet at 6 a.m. and run through every number together and clean it and fix the formations,” said dancer Emily Morris.
The concert is a labor of love and unity for the ballroom team, and it serves as a bonding experience for those involved.

“We see each other a lot, and so we get to spend tons of time together, and we just become like a family,” said Morris. “Even though the early mornings are hard sometimes, by the end we don’t care. We’re having fun together.”
Though there are other opportunities on campus to see students dance, the ballroom concert is a different experience entirely.
“It’s different from regular dance concerts, from maybe modern or ballet where you kind of just sit and watch,” said Morris. “With ballroom, everybody’s cheering the whole time, and we’re just hyping each other up.”
Tickets for the concert cost $5 when purchased from a company member and $10 at the door. The show on April 5 will be livestreamed.
