Thunderbirds continue to make noise with three strong performances

The Southern Utah University track and field teams were busy in three separate meets this past week. They started by tackling the Texas Relays from March 27-30 before heading to the UVU and Stanford Invitationals from March 29-30.

Texas Relays
Jaedyn Carpenter, Dylan Gibson, Noah Bringhurst and Nelson Douglas took 37th place in the 4×100-meter relay, crossing the finish line in 41.55 seconds. This team also placed 13th in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:11.54.

Cedar English placed third in the long jump by clearing 24-3 ¾, beating out athletes from other great programs like the University of Oklahoma and the University of Houston.

UVU Invitational
The men’s team took fifth place with 54 points, and the women’s team placed fourth with 92, giving Southern Utah fourth place overall with 146 points. This score beat big competitors like the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.

A 160-10 1/4-foot launch earned Kaden Banks fifth place in the men’s discus throw, also situating him at10th place in school history.

Dylyn Cooks placed seventh all-time in SUU history in the men’s triple jump, clearing a distance of 45-10 3/4. Levi Smith also joined the Thunderbird record books in 10th place for the long jump with a 23-3 1/4 leap.

Rebecca Hazelet showed out for the women’s team with a 194-7 1/2 hammer throw that placed her first at the meet and fourth all-time for the university.

Maya Benjamin, Iana-Michovani Graham, Jayden Lightford and Shante Myrie took second in the women’s 4×100 relay with a time of 46.30 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in SUU history.

Stanford Invitational
Coleman Cragun had an incredible performance in the 5,000 run, placing second with a time of 14:11.84. 

Hayden Harward took 10th in the 3000 steeplechase, recording a time of 8:48.05.

In the 800, Nathan Carlin took seventh place with an impressive time of 1:55.90.

Notable performances from the women’s team in the 3,000-meter steeplechase were Sariah Hernandez, who took 15th in the first group and completed the race in 11:00.95, and Madisan DeBos, who earned 18th place in the second group with a time of 10:40.00.

Next for SUU
The Thunderbirds will head to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the University of Las Vegas Invite from Friday, Apr. 5, to Saturday, Apr. 6.
