On Saturday, March 23, SUU Outdoors will be hosting their yearly bouldering competition. The event will be located at the Southern Utah University Climbing Wall in the J.L. Sorenson Physical Education Building. From 8:30 a.m. through 3:00 p.m., contestants will show off their bouldering skills and compete to win gear and prizes provided by ten sponsors. The prizes range from climbing ropes and crash pads to local restaurant gift cards.
The competition has been going on for over a decade and is greatly attended by spectators and climbers alike. Beginning, intermediate and advanced climbers are welcome. This year, the competition has been limited to 55 participants in order to facilitate more organization and give each competitor more time on the wall.
Not only is having an organized event like this a chance to engage with bouldering, it’s also an opportunity to meet with others that share the same passion for the sport.
“It’s more social than actually competitive,” said Claine Heaton, a judge for the competition. “There’s really good sportsmanship as well.”
The competitor positions have filled up, but it is still worth going even for those not climbing. Those watching can enter raffles for gift baskets, cheer on the climbers and make new friends.
