Benny Golson Jazz Music Brought to Life at SUU

The SUU Department of Music’s Jazz Band will bring to life the songs of Benny Golson on Friday, November 22, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater. Admission to this concert is free and open to the public.

Dr. Adam Lambert, Director of Bands at SUU shares, “Our Jazz Band Concert is a Benny Golson tribute, featuring tunes such as ‘Whisper Not’, ‘Little Karin’, ‘Stablemates’, and ‘Straw Boss’. Also programed is Count Baise’s ‘Magic Flea’, the classic tune ‘On Green Dolphin Street’ and Bob Mintzer’s funk/rock tune titled ‘Computer’.”

Benny Golson is the only living jazz artist to have written 8 standards for jazz repertoire. These jazz standards have found their way into countless recordings internationally over the years and are still being recorded. He has recorded over 30 albums for many recording companies in the United States and Europe under his own name and innumerable ones with other major artists. A prodigious writer, Golson has written well over 300 compositions.

The SUU Jazz Band and jazz combos are open to all students by audition. Students prepare and perform jazz music through ensemble and improvisational performance as close to a professional level as possible. Performances include a feature performance with the annual SUU High School Jazz Festival featuring nationally and internationally recognized guest artists, an annual Swing Dance for the University and local community, as well as competing at the Reno Jazz Festival.

Drew Holland, freshman music performance major, says, “I’m way excited to be here at SUU and especially playing with the SUU Jazz Ensemble. No place I’d rather be!”
