Southern Utah Volleyball faced off against California State at Sacramento on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the America First Event Center where they took a loss, 3-0.

SUU fell in the first set 25-18 and did not improve in the second where they came up short 25-16. Coming out of the half to start the third set the Thunderbirds came out strong on an early 5-0 run over the Hornets.

This was one of the bright spots of the day but unfortunately did not last long as the Hornets rallied back taking the lead in the middle of the match 13-12 then ultimately taking the match 25-19 and sweeping the T-Birds.

The Thunderbirds struggled throughout the day to stop the offensive attack from the Hornets. They bested the Thunderbirds in hitting percentage at .300% while SUU trailed at .104%.

SUU was led by senior Shannon Webb with nine kills followed by junior Stacey Hone with eight and sophomore Katie Montgomery with six.

The Hornets outshined the T-Birds was in blocks as well, with eight compared to SUU’s four.

This puts the Thunderbirds at 13-13 overall and 6-8 in the Big Sky. With four games remaining in the season SUU still has a chance to turn things around and get a winning record on the season before the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 28.

Southern Utah hits the road for two weeks before returning home where they will face off against the University of Idaho on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.
