Gear Up, Get Outside!

The region of southern Utah from Cedar City to Brian Head and everywhere between is recognized across the country and even the world as a great outdoors and winter getaway.

Brian Head snow is self-proclaimed as “The Greatest Snow on Earth” due to the high elevation that creates powder widely preferred by skiers and snowboarders.

With winter approaching, many of the local outfitters are stocking shelves with gear appropriate for the impending cold and snow.

Stores such as C-A-L Ranch, Sportsman’s Warehouse and the Eddie Bauer Outlet in St. George have many cold-weather and outdoor items available for purchase.

For those looking to rent or own their own specialized winter gear, Cedar Sports along with Desert Rat in St. George, and SUU’s very own Base Camp in Cedar City have fairly inexpensive equipment perfect for outdoor recreation during the chilly season.

There are a few places in Cedar City that offer an SUU student discount (Cedar Sports and ACE Hardware to name a few) to help lower the costs for students gearing up and raring to go out in the backyard of the national parks.

The Eddie Bauer Outlet in St. George has a greater selection of winter clothes to get people prepped for harsh weather.

Cedar Sports and SUU Outdoors are more rental-oriented, allowing per day and season rentals for high performance and basic/student skiers and snowboarders.

Ski/snowboard packages at Cedar Sports run between $30-$40, with winter clothing running between $4-$10 depending on the item. Snow shoes are also available at $10 per day.

At SUU Base Camp, rentals are available to not just students but community members as well, though the students retain a discounted price.

SUU’s snowboard packages are $20 per day, and their splitboard packages are $30. Splitboards are simply snowboards that split in half into skis, allowing cross country snow travel and snowboarding during downhill sections.

Skis aren’t available at Base Camp, but snowshoes, inflatable sleds and ice climbing gear are other options for winter adventurers.

If you want to learn more about any of the stores above, visit their websites as linked above or SUU Outdoors in the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
