Southern Utah Women’s Basketball started the season off right with a win surpassing 100 points in their home opener.

The SUU women’s basketball team tipped off against the University of Ottawa at Arizona Spirit on Friday, Nov. 1. The T-Birds won in dominant fashion defeating Ottawa 104-59.

Junior Rebecca Cardenas led the team with 20 points on the night and also racked up four assists. Senior Harley Hansen led the team with five assists and four seals and was also second in points with 14.

The T-Birds had a slow start with Ottawa quickly outscoring them 9-4 in the first few minutes of the game. Things quickly shifted sides as SUU took control and the lead shortly after, finishing the quarter 29-18.

Coming back from the second half SUU continued in dominant fashion and pushed their lead, further outscoring the spirit 48-20. Ottawa had no answers on offense or defense as the T-Birds had a 20-0 run for part of the fourth quarter.

This is the first time the women’s basketball team has surpassed 100 points since 2017.

The last time they did, they matched the score of 104 in their loss to Sacramento State who put up 110 points that game. This T-Bird win of 45 points over its opponent was one of the greatest margins of victory in team history.

The T-Birds will tip off it’s regular season on Thursday, Nov. 7 in the America First Event Center against California State Fullerton.
