Nickerson Concludes Career With All-American Performance

Southern Utah’s run at the 2019 NCAA National Championships came to a close on Saturday evening with Angie Nickerson in competition for the Thunderbirds at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Nickerson completed the 5,000-meter in a time of 16:38.08 to finish in 18th place. Her placement earned her Honorable Mention status on the 2019 All-American Team.

“What a fabulous career,” SUU head coach Eric Houle said. “To be that fast and develop at Southern Utah has been a crazy process with her, and we’re so grateful for her. Not every race works out like you’d like it to, and I think if it had been a cooler climate the outcome probably would have been different, but she just felt like she was sapped of any energy and you don’t have a lot of time to make adjustments in a race like this on this kind of a stage. She gave it a valiant effort, and it brings to a close a very, very impressive career at Southern Utah.”

This year Nickerson led the Thunderbirds to a team cross country title, claimed the individual cross country title, won three track and field gold medals and made her first ever trip to the NCAA National Championship.

With the conclusion of the men’s and women’s track and field seasons, the 2018-19 athletics season has come to a close for Southern Utah University.

“I think all coaches, no matter what university they’re at, feel the demands that are placed on the program just by athletes and others,” Houle said. “So to have a season with the many all-conference athletes, the all-americans, the conference championships and the academic accomplishments we did is awesome. You don’t have too many seasons like this. This is a season to remember.”
