SUU Sports Weekend Recap 3/1-3/3

Did you miss any of the action from SUU’s busy weekend? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a recap of everything that happened around SUU athletics this weekend.

Men’s Basketball Falls to Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. .– The T-Birds were defeated by the Grizzlies, 70-54, on Saturday night. Cameron Oluyitan led SUU with ten points while Brandon Better and Maizen Fausett followed with nine points each. The Thunderbirds (14-13, 9-9) remain at sixth place in the conference as they return to action Monday, March 4 at Montana State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed on Pluto TV.

Women’s Basketball Knocks Off Montana

CEDAR CITY, Utah– Four players scored double-digits to lead SUU to a 71-56 victory over the Montana Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon.

Bre Reid and Jessica Chatman each scored 15 points, shooting a combined five of nine from behind the arc. Rebecca Cardenas made four of seven threes en route to 14 points and Harley Hansen pitched in 14 points and seven rebounds.

As a team, the T-Birds finished at 45 percent from three, shooting 10-for-22. SUU shot 42 percent from the field, going 26-for-62.

The Lady T-Birds (7-20, 4-14) return home for senior night against the Montana State Bobcats Monday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center. The game will be streamed on Pluto TV Channel 236.

Gymnastics Drop Meet at No. 18 Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. — SUU’s Karley McClain won the event championship with an all-around score of 39.150 , but the team fell 195.050-196.825 to the No. 18 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

McClain set a personal record on vault, earning a 9.875.

The Flippin’ Birds (4-4, 2-2) will travel to two meets next weekend, competing in Logan, Utah against Utah State on Friday March 8 and in Seattle, Washington against the University of Washington on Sunday March 10.

Softball Goes 0-2 in Rain-Shortened Red Desert Classic

SAINT GEORGE, Utah — SUU was defeated 11-5 by Cal State Bakersfield and 5-1 by No. 24 Baylor on Friday afternoon. They were scheduled to play Utah State on Saturday as well as a double-header versus St. Mary’s and Notre Dame on Sunday, but inclement weather cancelled the final three games.

The Thunderbirds (1-9) open their home schedule with a double-header versus Utah Valley University on Saturday, March 9. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. and both games can be viewed on Pluto TV Channel 236.

Men’s Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The T-Birds defeated Mesa Community College 7-0 Friday morning then dropped a conference match against Northern Arizona 2-5 on Saturday.

SUU (8-4, 1-2) plays a neutral site match against Illinois State Monday, March 11 at 11 a.m. in Las Vegas. Then the team returns home to play Idaho State and Chicago State on March 16.

Women’s Tennis Defeats Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif.– SUU won a tightly contested 4-3 match against the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday morning.

The Thunderbirds (4-5, 1-0) travel to San Diego for three matches from March 12-14. They play Point Loma at 5 p.m. on March 12, Quinnipiac at 11 a.m. on March 13 and Daemen College at 11 a.m. on March 14.
