Thunderbird Softball Wraps Up 2018 Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The 2018 season came to a close for the Southern Utah softball team Sunday afternoon as they finished the season with a 17-7 loss to the Portland State Vikings.

The Vikings scored in every inning of the five-inning game, scoring two runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third, six in the fourth, and three in the third.

The Thunderbirds didn’t score until the fourth inning when Tess Matagi hit a pinch-hit two-run home run down the left field line. Hannah Williams also picked up a RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly that scored Nicole Simonson from third.

They scored four more times in the fifth with their backs against the wall. Kalei Watkins hit a three-run home run to left center and Kaitlin Williams hit a solo shot in the following at bat.

Southern Utah couldn’t get enough runs in the fifth inning to stay alive, dropping the game 17-7.

Sarah Murphy went 2-for-3 with a run scored in her final game as a Thunderbird. Seven other Thunderbirds picked up hits in the game as the team combined for nine hits.

The Thunderbirds finish the season with a 9-38 overall record and a 6-15 record in Big Sky Conference play.
