The Southern Utah softball team was in Provo, Utah Friday night for a doubleheader with the BYU Cougars. The Cougars swept the doubleheader in what was their 2018 home opener.
Game one saw the Thunderbirds held to just four hits as they were shut out by the Cougars 8-0. Madison Tuft, Kendall Kapitzke, Kalei Watkins, and Mikaela Thomson each had a hit in the ballgame for Southern Utah.
BYU scored runs in the first, third, and fifth innings, including a walkoff three-run home run from Alexa Strid in the bottom of the fifth.
The Thunderbirds were able to get on the board in game two, but big fourth and fifth innings for the Cougars kept them from coming away with a win.
Trailing by two in the third inning, Kapitzke made it 2-1 with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field that scored Tuft from third base. The Thunderbirds added another run the following inning when Watkins opened the inning with a solo shot to right center to make it 3-2 BYU.
The Cougars broke it open in the fourth with four runs on four hits and added another three runs in the fifth inning to take the 10-2 victory.
Watkins finished the night 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored, all on the home run in game two.
The Thunderbirds will open Big Sky play next weekend as they host the Weber State Wildcats for a three-game series starting on March 23.
