Thunderbirds Drop First Two Games of Red Desert Classic

The Southern Utah softball team kicked off the St. George Red Desert Classic Friday afternoon with losses to Seattle University and Nevada.

Game One: SUU 6, Seattle U 12

The Southern Utah offense picked up right where they left off last weekend in game one against the Redhawks.

The Thunderbirds scored three runs in the opening inning on back-to-back doubles from Taylei Williams and Kaitlin Williams. Seattle answered with two runs in the second, but Kendall Kapitzke hit a solo shot in the third to make it 4-2 SUU.

The Redhawks took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, but the Thunderbirds grabbed it right back in the bottom of the inning as Kapitzke added an RBI double and then stole home later in the inning.

Seattle retook the lead in the fifth inning and held onto it for the rest of the game, scoring in the sixth and seventh innings as well. The Thunderbird offense cooled off and the Redhawks came away with the 12-6 victory.

Kapitzke finished the game with 2-4 with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Taylei Williams was also 2-4 in the game.

Game Two: SUU 1, Nevada 12

The Thunderbirds struck first against the Wolf Pack. Kalei Watkins and Javlyn Weaver hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0 SUU in the second inning.

It was all Wolf Pack after that. Nevada scored runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, including two home runs in the fifth. Their 12 unanswered runs were too much for Southern Utah to overcome as the game ended 12-1 at the end of the fifth inning.

Watkins, Weaver, and Madison Tuft had the only Thunderbird hits in the the game.

The Thunderbirds will be back on the field tomorrow for games three and four as they take on Nevada and Boise State. Live stats will be available at suutbirds.com.
