The Southern Utah softball team wrapped up play in the 2018 UNLV Sportco Kickoff Classic Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to the UNLV Rebels.
The game was a close one the whole way through. Starting pitcher Samantha Guile sat down the first six Rebels she faced in the circle. UNLV picked up a run on two hits and a sacrifice bunt in the third and then got two more on three hits and a Southern Utah error in the fourth.
That was all the offense the Rebels would have as Guile shut them down over the final two innings of the game.
The Thunderbirds had at least one baserunner in every inning except for the fifth, but couldn’t string together the hits to bring them around to score. Taylei Williams and Sarah Murphy provided all of the offense for the T-Birds with Williams going 2-3 with a double and Murphy going 2-2.
Guile took the loss, but finished with a pretty good stat line. She pitched six innings and gave up just five hits and two earned runs. She allowed just one walk in her first complete game of the season.
Murphy wrapped up her weekend hit a solid .500 (7-14) with five runs scored and two doubles. Williams finished right behind her hitting .467 (7-15) with three RBIs and a run scored.
The Thunderbirds will jump on a plane next weekend and head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete in the Purple & Gold Challenge. The tournament is hosted by LSU and will see the T-Birds compete against Oregon State, Louisiana Tech, Central Arkansas, and LSU.
