Thunderbirds Fall Short Against Northern Arizona at Home

The Southern Utah women’s basketball team hosted Big Sky Conference rival Northern Arizona Saturday afternoon in the America First Event Center and fell to the Lumberjacks 72-55.

The Thunderbirds got off to a slow start Saturday scoring just eight points in the first quarter. The Lumberjacks were hot however, putting up 19 points on the T-Bird defense. Southern Utah got their offense going in the second quarter with 15 points, doubling their score. When the first half came to a close, it was NAU who could be found in front, leading it 35-23.

The Lady T-Birds come out strong in the second half, putting up 20 points on the Lumberjacks in the third quarter, but they couldn’t slow down the NAU offense. The Lumberjacks maintained their lead with 26 points to SUU’s 20.

The Thunderbirds outscored the Lumberjacks in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as they were able to escape with the 72-55 victory.

Johnson led the Thunderbirds on offense for the third straight game, finishing with 22 points and seven rebounds. She was also 8-8 from the free throw line. Larsen had 14 points with seven rebounds and Whitney Johnson finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

NAU’s Olivia Lucero led all scorers with 24 points on the afternoon.

The Lady T-Birds will host Northern Colorado and North Dakota next week with just six games left in the season.
