Dr. Steve Lunt, SUU Athletics Legend, Dies at 81

At age 81, Dr. Steve Lunt, a former student athlete at SUU whose administrative involvement with SUU spanned 53 years, died Tuesday night in Cedar City.

During his time at SUU, Lunt was an assistant to the President for Special Projects, physical education department chairman, athletic director and the go-between for SUU and the Utah High School Activities Association. In addition to his duties at SUU, Lunt served on the Utah Summer Games Board of Trustees, was director of Southern Utah Officials, president of the Southern Utah Officials Association and a chairman for the Utah Boxing Commission.

After his retirement from SUU in June of 2001 Lunt remained at the school to help plan high school football games and run the Coaching Factory, a program that follows SUU coaching alumni and recognizes them for their work in coaching.

Lunt was also inducted into the Utah High School Activities Association Circle of Fame in 1994, the Utah High School Officials Association Hall of fame in 1995 and the SUU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

A moment of silence will be observed at the SUU vs. Weber State men’s basketball game tonight in the America First Event Center.
