Thunderbirds Take Rare Home Loss In Match With Northern Colorado

Looking for their fourth straight home win, the Southern Utah University soccer team hosted the Northern Colorado Bears Friday afternoon. The Thunderbirds were able to create quite a few opportunities, but ultimately fell to the Bears 3-1.

“It was a pretty good game. I thought it was a pretty entertaining game to watch and overall we played fairly well,” head coach Fred Thompson said. “We need to tighten up what we are doing in the back line and now that we are creating all of these great chances we need to be able to put them away. Our overall soccer today was great and I think anyone watching would have been impressed with the way we played.”

Northern Colorado drew first blood when Olivia Seddon put one in the net off the post in the ninth minute. The Thunderbirds answered in the 32nd minute when Jessica French hammered home a corner kick from Payton Wells to tie the game at 1-1.

The first half came to a close with the Bears leading 2-1 after they put up another goal in the 43rd minute of play.

The Thunderbirds tightened things up in the second half and created a couple of good looks including a chance in the 69th minute that brought them within inches of tying the game. The Bears tacked on another goal in the 80th minute when Mariel Gutierrez scored her second goal of the game and made it the final score of 3-1.

The Thunderbirds will now turn their attention to their final home game of the season on Sunday against North Dakota. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m. and all six Thunderbird seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.
