Southern Utah To Contend Against Two More Conference Foes For Homecoming Week

With this week being Homecoming Week for Southern Utah, the Thunderbirds look to turn things around after after a tough road stretch last week. They will be competing against the University of Idaho and Eastern Washington inside the America First Event Center.

Southern Utah went on their first conference road trip of the season last week. Their first match of the week came against the Wildcats of Weber State. Weber State took control of the match after winning a tight first set to win the match 3-0.

MaCail Evans led the charge for Southern Utah in that match hitting seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage.

To finish off the weekend, the Thunderbirds went up against Idaho State University. The Bengals gained the early advantage in this match and went on to win it in three sets leaving Southern Utah with a 5-11 record thus far on the season.

Macky Fifita stood out in this match with a strong defensive performance of 20 digs.

The Vandals have gotten off to a strong start in conference play over the last couple weeks. They are 3-1 in conference matches and 8-7 overall. One of the highlights for Idaho’s season to this point was stealing a set away from ninth ranked Kansas University in a four-set loss.

Star players for the Vandals to look out for are Kaela Straw and Torrin Crawford. Straw has led the offensive attack for Idaho this year. She leads the team with 3.47 kills per set and a .256 hitting percentage. Straw has been a standout on the defensive end. She leads the team in blocks with 73 so far this season.

The Eagles of Washington University have started off conference play with two wins and two losses. Their overall record for the season is 5-8. Ashley Seiler, star outside hitter for the Wildcats, has been dominant at the net this year. She averages 3.94 kills per set and has recorded a total of 209 kills for the season. Seiler has been very active on defense as well with 145 digs for the year.

The match against Idaho will begin at 7 p.m. MT Thursday night, and Southern Utah will take the court versus Eastern Washington Saturday at 11:30 a.m. MT.
