The Thunderbird women’s golf team opened play at the 2017 Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday, and were led by sophomore Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong who finished the day in a tie for third.
Prasurtwong shot a 75 in the opening round and followed that up with a 74, to end the day with a five-over 149. She is currently in a tie with two other players on the leaderboard.
This is the highest spot a Lady T-Bird has been in after the first round of competition during the 2017-18 campaign.
Second for the Thunderbirds was sophomore Kyla Smith, who shot a 159 (85, 74). That put her in a tie for 29th on the leaderboard. Senior Nicole Jones was two shots behind Smith, shooting a 161 (83, 78) to finish the day in a tie for 41st.
Lindsay Aleman (167) and Miranda Reyes (173) finished fourth and fifth for the Thunderbirds respectively, which put them in a tie for 58th and 66th on the leaderboard.
The Thunderbirds had three student-athletes play as individuals. Katie Wills finished in a tie for 50th with a 164 (81, 83), Launa Wilson finished in a tie for 64th with a 171 (85, 86) and Taylor Bandley finished in 75th with a 183 (84, 99).
As a team, the Thunderbirds shot a 324 in the opening round, but shot an improved 312 in the second to finish the day with a 636. That put the T-Birds in ninth moving into Sunday’s final round.
Santa Clara (598), Hawaii (600) and UC Riverside (619) were the top three teams at the event on Saturday.
Marni Murez from Santa Clara was the top player on the leaderboard, shooting an even-par 144 (73, 71)
The third and final round will begin on Sunday morning.
