“Project Hail Mary” was released in theaters on March 20, 2026. Based on the science fiction novel by Andy Weir, the film was a scientific, funny and enjoyable film.
The film follows the story of Ryland Grace, a junior high science teacher who is tasked with completing a nearly impossible, world-saving mission. Starring actor, Ryan Gosling, played the character well, impersonating him how he is envisioned by fans of Weir’s novel.
“Gosling’s self-deprecating charm combined with crack comic timing (carried) this cosmic dramedy all the way home,” said movie critic Allison Gillmor.
The character Ryland Grace was humorous and lovable with his witty one-liners and relatable personality. The adorable alien creature, Rocky, was a heartwarming audience favorite.
“Project Hail Mary” scored a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics, and exceeded box office expectations, earning $140.9 million globally within the first weekend.
The film’s success was likely due to viewer excitement following Weir’s previous movie adaptation, “The Martian,” which grossed over $680 million back in 2015. Despite the more adult-oriented novel, the movie adaptation of “Project Hail Mary” remained family-friendly.
“Besides a few pieces here and there, the movie version followed the book perfectly,” said fan and recent reader of the novel, Grayson Breinholt. “It was genuinely one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen.”
“Project Hail Mary” is entertaining all throughout, however, the movie’s runtime is nearly three hours long. Viewers are advised to grab a snack and plan accordingly prior to seeing the film.
“Project Hail Mary” will be in theaters until further notice. The film can also be purchased on select streaming platforms. For more information, visit the Rotten Tomatoes website.
