Washington City implements the newest farmers market in Southern Utah

A new community market in Washington City, Utah is giving students a new way to spend Saturday mornings while supporting local farmers, artists and musicians.

The Washington Utah Farmers Market takes place year-round every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at the Washington Veteran’s Park.

“I love the farmers market. I go every chance I get,” said St. George, Utah resident Fran Sayer.

The market is operated by Summer and Harry Altena, who also participate as vendors of the Dry Orchard and Pops Chips and Salsa.

“What makes us different is because we’re vendors ourselves,” said Summer. “You understand the vendors, you understand what they need; if it’s shade or close parking for those who are a little bit older.”

The market features over 60 vendors, all locals from Southern Utah.

“We hand pick everyone so there’s no duplicates” Harry added. “We try to treat everyone like family.”

Unique to this market is a booth made for kids. The Kid Zone is home to a free scavenger hunt. Children can pick up a card from the booth with four Utah native animals. Pictures of these critters are hidden throughout the market. Once marked off, kids can return to the booth to receive a prize.

Those interested in sharing their talents at the market can contact the Altenas by messaging them on Instagram.

Students can visit the farmers market at 25 E. Telegraph St. in Washington or visit their Facebook page for more information.
