Kenzie Porter and Keegan Dickinson are running for Southern Utah University’s student body president and executive vice president.
The team’s main goals are to put student voices into action, improve access to mental health resources and provide greater support for student clubs and organizations.
“SUU is created for the success of students,” said Porter. “It’s for us to get a job, go into the workforce and get that degree. You can’t really do that if you’re struggling, so I just want to make sure people feel seen and heard in that sense.”
Both juniors at SUU, the team met through Involvement Captains, now named The Flock, during their freshman year. They formed a friendship, and Dickinson used to joke that if Porter ever ran for student body president, he would run as her vice president. At the time, Porter thought that was never going to happen.
“The more we walked around campus and attended activities, the more I fell in love with SUU,” said Dickinson. “That was when Kenzie and I sat down together and said we want to run, we want to continue making a difference and help contribute to the growth that SUU has.”
Porter is the current judicial vice president of SUU’s Student Association. Her role is looking at and interpreting policies to find out what would most benefit students. This position has allowed her to step back and evaluate SUU’s campus and the student body that makes it up and argue for change.
Porter and Dickison strive to have more transparency in the student government so people can know what is going on and how they can make informed decisions and have access to the resources that will enhance their college experience.
“I want people to actually be represented and supported,” said Porter. “Whether that’s creating a club or just getting a little extra help when things are hard, I just want to be there for people.”
Voting closes today at 5 p.m., so be sure to vote for the candidates you want to see in the next round for SUUSA elections.
