Flippin’ Birds prepare to take on UC Davis and Utah State

The Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team  is returning home to host the University of California, Davis Aggies on Friday, Feb. 27. Those aren’t the only Aggies SUU will be facing this week, as Utah State University will be taking on the T-Birds on Monday, March 2.

Both games will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.

Southern Utah

SUU is currently sitting at a 5-8 overall record and is ranked No. 28 nationally.

The team is coming off of a loss to the University of Utah where they started off slow but were able to build up momentum over the course of the meet. While they put up a good fight, the Flippin’ Birds lost 197.425-195.825. Despite this, SUU tallied three routines with scores of 9.900 or better.

In terms of home game victories, the T-Birds are at 1-1 right now following a loss to BYU and a triumphant win to Boise State at the start of the season. The team has historically put up a good fight in every meet they have performed in, with even their losses coming down to a couple of points. The home-court advantage could be just what they need to take home victories this week.

UC Davis

The UC Davis Aggies are currently ranked No. 58 nationally. They hold a record of 4-10.

The team is coming off of a tri-meet at San Jose State University, where they placed third against the Spartans and the US Air Force Academy. Despite the low finish, UC Davis scored a season-best on the beam, with a 49.025.

The star gymnast on the team has been Amelia Moneymaker, who topped the 39.000 mark for 22nd time in her career. She is also responsible for the Aggies’ top marks this season, with a 9.950 on floor and a 9.900 on beam. Moneymaker recently won Gymnast of the Week in the conference.

Utah State

The USU Aggies sit at 12-4 in the standings and are ranked No. 30 nationally.

Utah State is coming off of a match against Boise State, where they won 196.325-194.950. That score is a season-high for the squad and the ninth-highest score in the program’s history. The Aggies won every event during the meet.

This meet will mark the fourth time the Flippin’ Birds have taken on the Aggies this season. The three previous games were on the road, and all three games resulted in close scores. If the T-Birds continue to put up a fight and make the most of their home turf, their losing streak to the Aggies could finally end on Monday.
