Seeking their fourth win in a row, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will hold a game against Abilene Christian University in the America First Event Center on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. This will be the final home matchup for the women’s basketball team this year, as they’ll have three more road games before the Western Athletic Conference Tournament starting March 11.
Southern Utah
SUU holds a strong 18-8 record and sits at 10-4 in conference play. They hold the second-best overall record in the WAC and would possess second place in the conference with a win on Sunday.
Despite a lackluster 3-3 start to conference play, the Thunderbirds have done quite well for themselves. They’ve won seven of their eight games since that point and would tie their best winning streak of the year with another victory.
The team has faced Abilene Christian twice this year. The first was a disheartening 82-54 loss in Texas, while the second was a 71-68 win in Cedar City. Both teams are on hot streaks, so it will come down to who can use that momentum more efficiently.
SUU and ACU have faced off seven times. Every game in Cedar City ended with a T-Bird win, while every game on ACU’s home court saw them grab the victory.
Abilene Christian
The Wildcats have a conference-best 19-7 overall record and sit at 10-3 in the WAC. A win would move them to the top spot in the conference, while a loss would see them slip to No. 3.
ACU has been consistently good for months. They’ve only had one losing streak all year, on Nov. 29, and have gone 15-4 since that point.
Their success has been heavily owed to a big three of Payton Hull, Meredith Mayes and Erin Woodson. Each player averages more than 14 points per game and rounds out the top three or four on the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
With SUU also relying on the offensive prowess of a trio of players, this game will be a showcase of star power and of which team can get the most out of its bench.
