Dolan Cain is Sok Hop’s upcoming performer for this Tuesday, Feb. 17. Before going to see him DJ, learn about the origins of how he got interested in DJing, his style and where he plans to go.
“My main objective is to melt people’s brains; we’re going to have a full lobotomy session.”
Cain’s interest in DJing was first sparked at a house party a year and a half ago. He saw a DJ board, and spoke with the hosts about the behind-the-scenes aspects and how to use the board. He and his friend proceeded to jam with it all evening.
The artist bought his own DJ board shortly after and has been practicing since and playing gigs on the side when he can.
“For someone who’s so bad at technology, this is the last thing I should be getting my hands on,” said Cain.
The process of learning the software, the different parts of songs, what songs sound good, and which ones don’t and managing files has been the most difficult part. After all the technicalities, it boils down to what keeps the audience engaged and entertained.
“I just want to make people make the grossest, most outrageous bass face you possibly can,” said Cain. “All scrunched up, kind of looking a little bit confused, mouth open, hands in the air.”
Cain prides himself on bringing a different sound than what people are familiar with in club settings, more than the “boots and cats” dancers are used to. He is changing the tune with EDM remixes and hard beats and urges people to bring their boogie.
Dolan Cain will be performing at Sok Hop tonight at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
