What you missed in the news this month

1. Maduro captured and taken to the U.S.

The United States military carried out a strike against Venezuela and subsequently captured President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro and his wife were brought to New York, where they face charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.

For now, President Trump says the United States will run Venezuela. Trump also said the U.S. would sell Venezuela’s oil globally.

Congress voted down a bill that would prevent Trump from exercising further power over Venezuela.

2. Minneapolis woman killed by ICE

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis. The death led to national protests and backlash against ICE.

In a 47-second clip of the altercation, the woman, Renee Nicole Good, is shown blocking traffic in her car. As she pulls away, allegedly hitting the officer, the ICE agent fired his gun. Good died from her injuries. 

3. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland died

A prominent religious leader for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died in December. Holland was an apostle for the church and served as a general authority since 1989. He died from complications associated with kidney disease.

4. U.S. bombs Nigeria

On Christmas Day, the U.S. bombed Islamic State militants in Nigeria. The attack was orchestrated with Nigeria.

Trump said the strikes were planned and did not confirm or deny if more strikes were to come. Casualties are unclear, but Trump said “every camp got decimated.”

5. Church shooting in northern Utah

Two people were killed in a shooting outside of a Latter-day Saint church in Salt Lake City. The shooting left six others injured, three of whom were critically injured.

Multiple suspects were arrested for obstruction of justice, although a shooter has not been identified.
