Flying T-Birds to take on struggling Mavericks

After winning their opening conference game, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will head down south to face the University of Texas at Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m.

This game will be played in the College Park Center and can be streamed live on ESPN+.

Southern Utah

The T-Birds are 9-4 on the year and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Despite the strong record, Southern Utah has struggled on the road. SUU is 3-4 and averages 65.2 points per game away from Cedar City.

Even with the low numbers in away games, Southern Utah has produced one of the top offenses in their conference. SUU leads the WAC in scoring offense with 78.5 points a game as well as in field goal percentage and free-throw percentage.

The leaders of this offense have been sophomore guard Sierra Chambers and junior forward Ava Uhrich. Chambers is coming off a 19-point performance where she went 10/11 from the free-throw line.

Uhrich is also playing some of her best basketball as of late. She has five double-doubles on the year and is averaging 19 points in her last four games.

UT Arlington

After falling short in the WAC Championship a year ago, UT Arlington has struggled to find rhythm to begin the season. The Mavericks are 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in the WAC, currently holding a three-game losing streak.

One of their biggest shortcomings is the ability to produce points. They rank last in the WAC averaging only 61.08 points a game. One reason for this is their lack of assists. The team ranks second to last in the conference, averaging 13 per game.

The Mavericks’ only player averaging 10 or more points is Kira Reynolds. The freshman forward from South Bend, Indiana is averaging 12 points and 8.2 rebounds a game. Reynolds also leads the WAC averaging 2.95 blocks a game.

Southern Utah is 0-7 all-time against UT Arlington.
