Krampus takes over Bookdom Apothecary for a night

Families gathered for a festive Krampus Meet & Greet at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 at Bookdom Apothecary on 1579 N Main St. Admission was free, and the event offered story time, treats and a chance to meet Krampus himself.

The shop was fully decorated for the occasion, mixing Christmas lights on the tree with darker themed decor. Shelves were filled with a wide variety of books, some of them horror and thriller, while still including some classics, such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

The owners and staff said they were thrilled with how many families stopped by throughout the night, especially seeing how excited the kids were during pictures.

A special room was set up just for children, complete with a decorated Christmas tree, games and a warm place to sit for the readings. Kids moved in and out of the room all evening, grabbing treats and laughing as they talked with Krampus.

Some SUU students were also drawn in by the atmosphere. SUU student Nicole Villarreal said she loved browsing the books and hanging out in such a creative space as the bookdom is.

“Honestly, I came just for the books, but this place really had a special vibe that captured my attention from the beginning… plus Krampus did look real,” said Villarreal.

Krampus, dressed in full costume with horns and fur, posed for photos, and even though he is a creature of horror, he kept things playful rather than scary. Families and kids took pictures, played with toys and explored the shop while waiting for their turn.

Bookdom Apothecary will continue hosting holiday events throughout December. Upcoming activities include: Story Time with the Grinch on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m,  Ornament Paint Night on Dec. 13 at 4 p.m., Story Time with Santa Claus on Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. and Relief Print Making on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.
