Every Wednesday, the Southern Utah University Super Smash Bros club, also called “The Living Room Legends,” gathers to play a bracket in the Sharwan Smith Student Center. On Nov. 5th, they hosted their 10th event of the semester, but it goes further back than that.
With the club dating back to before the most recent Smash Bros. game’s release in late 2018, many individuals have been able to take the chance to participate.
“What I like the most about the Living Room Legends tournaments is the fact that they’re free entry and open to the public,” explained Canyonview High Schooler Carter Shulsen. “A lot of other tourneys that are close by have entry fees or specifications of who can play, and they don’t have that big of an attendance because of it.”
The average tournament yields between 27 and 35 entrants per week. Consisting of SUU students, high school students and other Cedar City locals.
Club co-president and resident 1-ranked player Hyrum Despain described the growth he has seen from the club over the years.
“It’s really dope to see it actually. When the events were in their earlier stages, I don’t think we had quite as good of a system as we do now,” said Despain. “It’s gotten to a point where we have people who used to attend the tournaments come back and visit because they miss playing with all of the people they’ve met.”
After partnering with the Computer Science Department, the club received funding for items such as a stream setup and has sent the competitive team to multiple major tournaments with international competitors. The team traveled to California for Genesis X in 2024, followed by the Las Vegas bracket and LvlUp Expo in 2025.
The Living Room Legends are a product of years of effort and building a community that welcomes all for the love of the game.
If students have additional questions or want to start their own club, they should start by stopping by the Student Involvement and Leadership Office located in room 177 of the Student Center.
